Geographical Indications
Roquefort cheeses, Champagne sparkling wines, Port wines, Tequila distillates, Cerrado coffee, Vale dos Vinhedos wines, Swiss chocolate, Paris perfumes, anyway, names of geographical places around the world that indicate a differentiation of products originating therefrom.
Geographical Indications are also distinctive signs, but they identify the origin or source of a product or service.
There are two types:
one, Indication of Origin, where the product comes from a certain region, but does not mean that it originates from it. Perfumes from Paris, although they are mainly originated from the city of Grasse, in the south of France; the other, Denomination of Origin, where the product not only comes from an restricted region, but it is also originated from that region, bearing local characteristics of natural and human factors. Vale dos Vinhedos, Napa Valley, and Rioja are a few examples. INPI registration is declarative, and holding it provides exclusivity recognition in Brazil.
